It amazes me that the trunk of the tree has one length on it of no limbs on one side. How'd that happen?

This shot is in a "clear-cut"--- and area where trees have been harvested. Trees are left here and there, but where a tree was surrounded by other trees, growth is sometimes inhibited. The lumber companies call clear-cuts "Temporary meadows".
