In August 1980 I went on a flying camping trip to the Pacific Northwest. We flew past Mount St. Helens and gave it a wide berth. We landed in Port Angeles and set up our tent in an airplane campground they had at the time. While we were waiting for our friends to arrive we saw the huge plume of ask from one of the subsequent eruptions. Were were a bit nervous because our friends wanted to circle the mountain (maintaining the air restrictions of course) before joining us. Fortunately they were well on their way to meet us and didn't get caught in any of the ash cloud that would have been really back for the plane's engine. - Margy
