I took this picture three years ago on Johnston Ridge, the best place for views into Mt. St. Helens' caldera. The Indian Paintbrush grows like crazy there, and the remains of a giant tree blown over in the blast 45 years ago dominate this picture. I'm sad to say we haven't been able to go back up there since May of 2023, when a massive landslide closed the highway. The damage was severe, and a new bridge is being built, but repairs will take until 2027. I'm glad we have our pictures to look at.

The dry trunk is oozing determent and despair

Gorgeous scene. It's good to have photos or a photo to look back on as to how things once were. With a new road coming in the future, it will be different.

I am sorry to hear about the landslide blocking your access to this place. You do have a stunning photo of the old wood and Indian Paint Brush.

I am so very sorry to read of the long term affect of the landslide, Bill. As spring unfolds you will be really missing the access to Johnson Ridge. Thanks to the lovely Linda, we both have photos we have taken, to reflect back on the incredible beauty of the ridge.
