Loading logs for the Orient

Zooming in from the same location as yesterday--  Thousands of giant logs are ready to be shipped to the orient.  The ship has its own cranes to load the logs.  Sometimes as many as 8 ships will be anchored in the Columbia River waiting to take on cargo at the port.  Besides logs, it is one of the largest grain ports in the country, with the grain coming in on mile-long unit trains.

Wow. What type of woods? In days gone by wood was shipped the other way my (unreliable) memory tells me. Teak and ebony.

Wonderful picture Bill. Amazing this view.
But it is sad to see how much forest must disappear for the luxury of man.

Greetings, Marco

I am always fascinated with the ocean going freighters. I don't get to see them around here.

Yes, once again a very impressive picture of port activity on the Columbia River. Thank you for all these clarifications concerning this picture.

A huge logging truck passed me yesterday and it wasn't as pretty a sight as this photo.

A sight to see, perhaps, it is a waste of wood, it is also ecology telling me of the disaster.

My goodness a lot of ex-trees there..nice photo.
We have an area here in Tasmania where trees are logged and exported, then new trees to grow and be logged.
