Barge traffic on the Columbia is always keeping the locks on the dams busy. This one is westbound.

I find this photo extraordinary for its evocative power. I never tire of looking at it. Perhaps because it suggests a world where nothing has changed, where peaceful life goes on. The river seems so soft, so welcoming. I wonder at the smell of such a place....
