I don't know what that is growing on the side of that tree, but it doesn't look happy...

A type of lichen? Which might mean it is quite happy. I am clueless.

Crece en algunos árboles y no parece que quede muy estético pero tal vez cumpla alguna función que beneficie al árbol.

This appears to be a burl growing on the tree. They are the result of injury, virus, or fungus, where the tree grows despite the stress. Tree burls can sell from $100 to over $10,000 a pound to woodworkers who do all sorts of creative things with them given their unusual structure.
