One of my favorite subjects: smaller rivers and creeks-- like the Klickitat River, just a mile or two before it joins the mighty Columbia on the east side of the mountains.

 

One of my favorite subjects: No surprise, right? The BNSF trains in the golden hour, on the dry side of the mountains...

 

One of my favorite subjects: I never get tired of trains in the Gorge, particularly on the dry side of the mountains, and the Washington side of the Columbia River.

One of my favorite subjects: The White River Falls, near Tygh Valley, was the site of Oregon's first hydroelectric power plant, starting in 1910. It no longer generates electricity and is now an Oregon State Park.

 

One of my favorite subjects: old trucks, like this 1936 Chevy! The old barn made it even better.

One of my favorite subjects: anything with old wood, old nails, and an open doorway...

 

One of my favorite subjects: The juxtaposition of The Dalles Dam on the Columbia River, now 65 years old, and the much older remains of a Shaker Indian Church and small homestead. Nobody is preserving these old buildings so I doubt that there will be any sign of them before long.

 

One of my favorite subjects: really ANY of the Cascade Mountain Range peaks. From this spot in the high plains farmland of Oregon, you can see two of them! Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier! The taller hills are in Washington and are about 30 miles to the north, and the Columbia River is just this side of those hills. Mt. Adams is about 30 miles north of the Columbia, and Mt. Rainier (the grandest of them all) is about 50 miles north of Mt. Adams. Mt. Rainier isn't as easy to see, but it is well over 100 miles away!

 

One of my favorite subjects: The amazing Columbia River Historical Highway on the Oregon side of the river. Most people see the western part with the waterfalls, but this section between Mosier and Rowena is another magnet for photographers.

 

One of my favorite subjects: another stately abandoned home in North Central Oregon--- It was always a pleasure to see it and to stop and take a picture or two. I love the cow in this shot.

Hey everyone:  I made a startling discovery last night--  there were well over a hundred comments from familiar blogging friends had been trapped in the spam filter since the beginning of April of this year.  I freed them all from captivity and will be checking my spam filter on a daily basis.  I found 3 more today.  Some comments from each person got through OK, and some were locked in spam jail.  I have no idea why.  I had no problem before April of 2022.  I suggest you check your spam filter often.  

One of my favorite subjects: Or at least it used to be. The Nelson house near Dufur Oregon was a magnet for photographers, but a wildfire left nothing but ashes in 2018. I especially liked the farmer's simply planting and harvesting around the beautiful old landmark-- as seen here.

 

One of my favorite subjects: The old schoolhouse on Tygh Ridge, with Oregon's Mt. Hood in the background.

 

One of my favorite subjects: Even when no one comes to clean up the weeds, the sun still shines on the old 8 Mile Cemetery, about 20 miles south of the Columbia River in central Oregon.

 

One of my favorite subjects: I have ancestors buried in little pioneer cemeteries like this one. Some were quite successful, and at least one was a bit notorious. I love these monuments to the past

 

One of my favorite subjects: The tunnels, the basalt cliffs, and the BNSF trains on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge.

 

One of my favorite subjects: The trains in the Columbia River Gorge! The Union Pacific engines at the head of this westbound train on the Oregon side are out of sight in that amazing cut in the basalt cliff.

 

One of my favorite subjects: Again, Stonehenge, high in the hills above the Columbia River, about 100 miles east of Portland, Oregon.

One of my favorite subjects: High above the Columbia River and the towns of Maryhill, Washington, and Biggs Junction, Oregon, is Washington's own Stonehenge-- built over 100 years ago as a memorial to those lost in the First World War.

The barn may be ready to fall down, but it still makes some nice shade for these two in the hot afternoon sun...

 

High in Washington's Goodnoe Hills, this is the abandoned two room schoolhouse where so many kids of different ages, different beliefs, and different backgrounds were free to learn together.
